A steadfast group of mystery book fans in our book club read all 17 of the existing Inspector Gamache books. This is not the only indication of the popularity of Louise Penny and her famous book series set in the fictional town of Three Pines, Quebec. Last year’s book, The Madness of Crowds, was at the top of the NY Times best selling hardcover fiction list for 5 weeks straight.
Our club’s Penny fans, along with mystery book fans everywhere, will finally be treated to a video series production of Three Pines premiering on Amazon Prime on Friday, Dec 2, 2022. With eight one-hour episodes in total, the first two episodes will premiere on Dec 2, and two new episodes will be released each week until the finale on Dec 23. (Or wait until Dec 23 and binge it!)
Alfred Molina gives a good interpretation of Louise Penny’s Gamache. I have not heard of any controversy about his fitness for the role. Louise Penny is pleased. And several of our group have been very positive. See video previews here. He has the look and the voice.
Meanwhile, A World of Curiosities, Penny’s 18th Armand Gamache tale is due in stores on Nov 29. So many have pre-sold that it is likely to be at the top of the NYTimes best selling lists already.
Louise Penny is a much loved mystery author
One of the many things that Louise Penny does extraordinarily well is her wonderful website. The site is full of fun quotes, links to maps, photos, book tours, mugs and other Three Pines souvenirs, and a lot of personal sharing and interesting commentary about books and the goodness of life.
Penny also does one of the best author monthly newsletters for fans that I have ever seen. Here is the latest newsletter. If you are a Penny fan, perhaps you should subscribe.
A Washington Post book review said that there was a bit of Nancy Drew in Penny’s 12th book, A Great Reckoning, but that “Penny, as ever, has something more ambitious in store.” Indeed, her books are well crafted to bring you … something more.
